Brian Au is a versatile bass, tenor, and utility trombonist whose artistry blends technical mastery, stylistic flexibility, and a passion for collaboration. Equally at home anchoring from the bass chair, leading as principal, or filling any role required, he has established himself as an adaptable and dedicated musician with a growing presence in orchestral, wind, and chamber ensembles. A native of Richmond, Virginia, Brian distinguished himself early through consistent principal roles in school and district ensembles. At Glen Allen High School, he served as Principal Trombone of the Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, and Wind Symphony, while also performing with marching and jazz ensembles. His leadership was recognized through various leadership appointments during high school and youth orchestra. Some notable honors throughout these years include being brass captain and low brass section leader, he also won his high schools concerto competition leading to a featured performance of Guilmant’s Morceau Symphonique in 2022. Beyond school, Brian excelled in regional and youth ensembles. He performed with the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra, the VBODA District 1 Band, and Henrico County Honors Band, often in principal or bass trombone roles. His artistry has since been recognized at the international level: in 2025 he was named a semifinalist in the Southeast Trombone Symposium’s Shires Bass Trombone Excerpts Competition judged by names such as James Markey and Brian Hecht of the Boston and Dallas symphonies respectively. and performed with the Commonwealth Winds. Brian’s training reflects mentorship from leading trombonists, including current studies with Joe Maiocco (Kansas City Symphony), Dr. Matt Niess, and Dr. Jeff Cortazzo at Shenandoah Conservatory. Previous teachers include Dr. Evan Williams (National Symphony) and Eden Garza (Seattle Symphony). With proven experience as a soloist, section leader, and adaptable utility player, Brian continues to grow through study, performance, and competition. He brings artistry, reliability, and versatility to every ensemble, establishing himself as a trombonist to watch in the years ahead.
